Restaurant/Shopping

When you enter a restaurant, usually the first question they ask is “Nanmeisama deska?”which means   “How many people?” and sounds like this:

You could just use your fingers, but if you wanna have some fun, try using Japanese:

2 people HUTARI

3 people SAN’NIN

4 people YONIN

5 people GONIN

6 people ROKUNIN

Another question they may ask you is “Tennai de omeshiagari deska?” Which means “Are you eating here?”and sounds like this:

When you order “One Beer please” in Japanese, it’ll be “Beeru hitotsu kudasai.” It’s not ichi beeru.” Two beers will be “Beeru hutatsu kudasai,” and so on.

Do not feel hesitant at all to loudly say “SUIMASEN” to get a waiter’s attention. It is not impolite and you do not need to wait to see someone. They will come find you. Sometimes there’s a button on the table you can push to call them too!
